Funding and Opportunities

The EFCSN supports independent fact-checking organisations and initiatives that strengthen the integrity of Europe’s information space. 

Through our funding and support programs, we contribute to a broader European effort to reinforce fact-checking across Europe, improve resilience against disinformation, and sustain a strong, independent media ecosystem. 

Our initiatives are designed to help the network develop new ideas, scale proven approaches, and produce high-quality content.

How We Support the Network

Our funding programs are designed to strengthen the network from the ground up:

Innovation

We support new approaches, tools, and methodologies that advance fact-checking and counter disinformation. This includes experimental formats, new or improving technological solutions, and collaborative models that allow fact-checkers to lead on narrative intelligence.

Expansion

We help organisations grow their reach and strengthen operations, particularly in underserved regions and languages. This stream focuses on rebalancing influence across the network to ensure equity.

Content

We fund the production of high-quality fact-checking journalism. These outputs inform the public, enhance media literacy, and provide the structured data necessary for journalists, researchers, and civic institutions to navigate complex information environments.

Tech Accountability

We fund investigative studies that hold digital platforms and AI models accountable for the spread of misinformation in Europe. These reports analyze regulatory compliance and algorithmic transparency to provide the evidence needed for stronger policy-making and a safer information space.

Protection Scheme

In addition to project-based funding, a dedicated Protection Scheme is available to support fact-checkers facing risks caused by the work they do.

This scheme recognises that independent fact-checking can expose organisations and individuals to legal, cyber, and psychological pressures. It provides targeted support: from cybersecurity measures to legal aid, to safeguard their work and wellbeing. These actions complement broader efforts to strengthen democratic resilience and information integrity across Europe.

We work to promote freedom of expression through collective monitoring of misinformation and disinformation trends across Europe. When such trends emerge, we draw attention to them by providing clear, evidence-based information that empowers citizens and policymakers to make informed decisions. This work supports a healthy public debate without controlling or removing content.
